Vintage Conditions

The 2016 harvest was excellent for red wines, one of the best since the renowned 2003. The absence of late spring frosts ensured the uninterrupted development and ripening of the grapes. The spring and early summer was slightly wetter than usual, but not enough to markedly slow ripening or cause illness and defects of the grapes. July and August were dry with a pleasant average temperature of 22°C. Phenolic maturity was achieved with good levels of ripening of the fruit and optimal sugars and acids, giving excellent fruit aromas and expression of the varietal character. The red wines from the 2016 harvest were characterised with a very rich and beautiful colour.

Winemaking

Selected grapes are handpicked and delivered to the winery where they are sorted by hand, destemmed and pressed using modern Bucher presses. Vinification takes place in small 4,000 litre vats and fermentation is carried out with selected yeast under strict temperature control with extensive “soft” contact of the grape skin with the fermenting grape juice. After completion of the alcoholic fermentation, the wine is decanted to oak barrels where the malolactic fermentation occurs. The wine matures for 5 months in 225 litre French and American oak barrels. The clarity of the wine is achieved naturally without the use of any fining agents. Though ready to drink now, the wine has an aging potential for 2-3 years.
